17 Women-Founded Spirits Brands to Support Now and Always

women founded alcohol brands

The fact that the beverage industry has historically been male-dominated shouldn’t come as a shock. And while it remains a space in which women are largely underrepresented in leadership roles, we’ve recently seen more of them find success in the world of alcohol than ever before—and it’s about damn time. From Avaline’s clean and sustainable wines (brought to the masses by Cameron Diaz and her best friend, MERIT Beauty founder Katherine Power) and Bertha González Nieves’ innovative Casa Dragones tequila, to a game-changing range of premixed cocktails created by the owners of New York City hotspot Via Carota, women-led alcohol brands have—blissfully—become bar cart staples.

Though the recognition of female winemakers, distillers, and entrepreneurs may be long overdue, turns out, they’ve been behind the scenes making important contributions all along. In fact, women had prominent roles in Japan’s sake breweries way back in medieval times; even Catherine the Great is credited with revolutionizing Russia’s vodka industry in the late 1700s. But as women’s rights continue to be threatened, it feels like women-helmed booze brands are finally starting to get their due. And it’s not just because they’re female-founded, but because the products are just downright good. Women know what other women actually want to drink, whether it’s a slightly less smoky mezcal or dirty martini-worthy vodka. Also worth noting: there’s been a recent spike in non-alcoholic mixer and apéritif brands run by women, including Blake Lively’s Betty Buzz and Katy Perry’s De Soi, if that’s your thing.

There’s still, undeniably, a long way to go for women in the alcohol industry—but progress is progress. And although we are, of course, staunchly in the camp that we should be celebrating successful women every day, we’re taking Women’s History Month as an official opportunity to toast the ladies of liquor (and wine, and beer). So, in the spirit of girl power, grab some friends, raise a glass, and join us in supporting the 17 women-run brands below.

Via Carota Martini Set

If you haven’t been able to score a table at Via Carota, at least these ready-to-pour drinks can help you forget it. Each one is impressive, but the latter is a serious standout, complete with six-times distilled vodka and real espresso. You can even buy it as a set with the signature martini bottle and two glasses.

Fukucho Seaside Sparkling Sake

Miho Imada is both the toji (translation: master brewer) and president of Fukucho, a rarity among traditionally male-led Japanese sake brands. Determined to create a sake that represented the agricultural heritage of her Hiroshima hometown, she spent the past two decades reviving an extinct indigenous rice called hattanso. The result? Internationally-acclaimed and award-winning sakes from her brewery, Imada Shuzo. This crisp sparkling blend, in particular, is made through secondary fermentation in a bottle and has a light, citrusy finish.

Avaline White

White

When they first entered the wine space in 2020, Avaline’s co-founders Cameron Diaz and Katherine Power set out to create reasonably-priced natural blends made purely from organic grapes. By skipping unnecessary additives (read: colors, concentrates, sugars) and championing ingredient transparency from production to pour, they’ve delivered a range of clean wines that you can actually feel good about drinking, from a bottle of crisp white to cans of refreshing rosé.

The only tequila to be made exclusively in Mizunara—a rare oak that’s traditionally used to age Japanese whiskies—the innovative new expression is a category first; it’s only fitting that it comes by way of the first female maestra tequilera.

Talea Beer Co. is New York City’s first exclusively female-owned brewery, with two taproom locations in Brooklyn to boot. Before they left their corporate jobs in 2020, co-founders LeAnn Darland and Tara Hankinson were avid homebrewers; together, they decided to disrupt the bro-oriented craft beer industry and create a more inclusive product that they’d want to drink with friends in lieu of a glass of rosé. The result? Low bitterness and fruit-forward flavors in their Sun Up Hazy IPA, Al Dente Italian-Style Pilsner, and more that you sample by curating a custom half-case online.

They currently offer three fruit-infused tequilas: Valencia Orange, Grapefruit Hibiscus, and the just-spicy-enough Cucumber Jalepeño.
