Fashion month can be dangerous viewing for an accessory fiend like myself – but there are usually only a few pieces I keep thinking about in the weeks that follow. While brands are increasingly employing shock tactics in a bid to secure Instagram buzz – even the ever-chic Victoria Beckham sent out a series of latex gloves this season – only a small handful of designs seem to linger at the back of my mind (and the top of my shopping list) after the frenzy has died down.
One thing I’ve long been considering, but am yet to bite the bullet on, is Loewe’s genius trompe-l'oeil sandal. You’re probably familiar with the broken-egg iteration that temporarily broke the social-media sphere, but it’s the pair perched on a postbox-red nail-polish bottle that has my heart. With sleek black leather straps and a not-too-high incline, it’s business from the front, party out the back.
Seriously though, these shoes aren’t just here for a good time: they’ve got weighty collector’s credentials too. Succinctly summing up Jonathan Anderson’s surrealist predilections, they’re the kind of thing that will transcend seasons and breathe a little conversation-starting edge into a roster of wear-forever looks.
Yes, they’re a statement-maker, but these season-defining sandals remain surprisingly wearable: imagine them with a white tank and boyfriend denim, a black satin maxi dress, or peeking out from oversized black tailoring. There is nothing I won’t wear them with, and for that reason I’m declaring them a Very Sensible Buy.
Not convinced? How about a half-price flash sale? Now they’re more sensible than a pair of plain black loafers – and about ten times more fun.
