Marc Jacobs Returns to the New York Runway

The designer premiered his fall 2021 collection—his first since the pandemic started—on the facade of Bergdorf Goodman.

Like many working amidst a global pandemic, Marc Jacobs took time in quarantine to breathe and reboot. But unlike designers who experimented with virtual presentations and continued to blaze forward with new collections, we haven't seen a runway from his eponymous label since pre-pandemic life. What used to be both the highlight and grand finale of New York Fashion Week ceased production altogether, leaving each season since his departure a little more hollow than the last—until last night, that is. Following his brief hiatus, Jacobs came back in full force for fall 2021, with a private runway show held at the New York Public Library, simultaneously projected on the facade of Bergdorf Goodman. Fashion for all, indeed!

"Our decision to pause allowed us to slow down, reflect, ruminate, re-evaluate, grieve, and take a thorough inventory of what works, what doesn’t work, what we love, what we are willing to let go of, and what was value, importance, and meaning," Jacobs wrote in the show notes. While we're missing the fanfare of runways past, the joyful exuberance of Jacobs' clothes remains intact. There are logos masquerading as graphic chain prints, bloated silhouettes, brief glimmers of holographic pailettes, and platform Mary Janes that we predict will inevitably wind up on the feet of Olivia Rodrigo and the TikTok set.

The partnership with Bergdorf Goodman doesn't end here, either. Starting in September 2021, BG will be the exclusive global retailer to offer Runway Marc Jacobs, bringing the two New York icons together.
